Oakhill, a unique community based Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) service in Swansea, is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

The service, which helps individuals to re-learn a wide range of life-skills in a positive and empowering environment, marked this wonderful occasion with a special party. Staff and the individuals supported at the service were joined by friends to celebrate the occasion with a range of activities including a quiz, raffle and karaoke.

Individuals supported at the service enjoyed sharing fond memories of past and present staff members, who form a close bond with the people they support, by pinning affectionate notes on a large oak tree which decorates the wall.

At Oakhill, the support services include a mixture of Neuro-occupational therapy, Neuro-Physiotherapy, Neuro-Speech and Language Therapy, Neuro-Psychology and Neuro-Psychiatry.

A range of proven care models are used to track the needs and progress of the people being supported, allowing staff to provide a unique, tailored care package structured around the individual.

This includes the St Andrew’s Swansea Neurobehavioural Outcome Scale (SASNOS), a neurobehavioural disability measure specifically designed for Brain Injury. This disability rating scale enables Oakhill staff to produce tailored rehabilitation care pathways with measurable progression.

Oakhill also utilises the Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) model, which measures and supports the achievements of people at the service, by setting attainable goals and developing a manageable roadmap to achieve them.

The service, which is unique in its ability to provide responsive rehabilitation and support by a team fully trained in person-centred approaches, is renowned for its warm and friendly environment and its empathetic mentoring approach. Staff pride themselves on supporting individuals and families through the challenges they face post injury.

Clare Whomes, Manager at Oakhill, commented:

“We are very pleased to be celebrating ten years of excellent work here at Oakhill.

“The past ten years have seen us supporting some incredible and inspiring people back in to their communities and we very much look forward to continuing to support individuals for many more years to come.”

Oakhill is operated by Tracscare, a leading care and support provider with over 25 years of experience in supporting individuals with Acquired Brain Injuries, Mental Health Needs, Autism and Learning Disabilities. The Service has been accredited by the Headway Approved Service Provider scheme of the past two years.
