Staff, residents and friends of Holcroft Grange care home, in Culcheth, showed off their baking prowess and raised over £100 by holding a bake sale in support of Help For Heroes, which provides support to those living with injuries and illnesses sustained while serving in the British armed forces.
The bake sale was held at the Croftwood Care-run home on Jackson Drive as part of the charity’s Bake for Heroes campaign. Baked goods were made by staff, residents and friends of the home and included delicious delights such as scones, muffins and cup cakes. Proceeds from the event were split between Help for Heroes and the Holcroft Grange activities fund, which is used to pay for trips and days out for residents at the home.
Making a guest appearance at the event was the Help for Heroes mascot, who residents took to their hearts and affectionately ‘christened’ him with their own nickname of Harry.
Holcroft Grange’s support of Help for Heroes was particularly poignant to 85-year-old George Spencer, a resident at the home and former soldier in the Scottish Rifle Regiment, also known as the ‘Cameronians’.
George commented: “Help for Heroes is a cause close to my heart, as many members of my family have served in the armed forces. My father, my brothers and I were members of the same regiment, and my nephew, Jamie, is currently serving in Afghanistan. I am glad that we can support Help for Heroes in the work they do for our brave soldiers.”
Also reflecting on his own time in the armed forces was 92 year old Ken Perkins, who served for three years on board HMS Nelson as an Ordnance Artificer, cleaning and maintaining the huge artillery guns and handling the gun shells, which he remembers ‘weighing a ton’.
Shirley Paton, Home Manager at Holcroft Grange, added: “Our Bake for Heroes event was a huge success and we were completely bowled over by everyone’s generosity. We’re committed to supporting good causes, and to be able to raise money for a charity so close to many of our residents’ hearts is fantastic. On behalf of everyone at Holcroft Grange, I’d like to say a big thank you to those who got involved on the day. Whether you baked, volunteered or donated – we couldn’t have done it without you!”
