Sale’s newest care home, Ashlands Manor Care Centre, has officially welcomed its first resident; William Jakeman.

William, aged 96, previously lived in an apartment in Alderley Edge.  He moved in a couple of weeks ago and has immediately settled in to his new home.

Born in Chorlton in 1920, William has enjoyed a varied and very successful career, working worldwide, including the UK, Middle East, Asia and West Indies.  During the war, he was a radar instructor, which is where he met his wife, Joan Caroline.

William married Joan in 1946 and they had two daughters, Barbara and Hazel, who lives in Timperley close to Ashlands Manor.  He has one grandson, three granddaughters and seven great grandchildren.

Taking advantage of Ashlands Manor being fully wi fi enabled, tech savvy William keeps in touch with family and friends via WhatsApp and is often seen googling the latest news to keep abreast of what is happening in the world.  He also takes hundreds of pictures, including selfies with the staff.

Keen to remain fit and well, William thoroughly enjoys the garden at Ashlands Manor and everyday he takes a walk around the grounds and participates in activities that encourage movement.

William says: “I feel very at home at Ashlands Manor.  Being the first resident, I was welcomed so warmly by the staff and feel very much cared for by them.

“The home itself is wonderful.  My bedroom is on the ground floor with French doors that open onto a small patio and the garden, which is just lovely.  I am also enjoying the food.  There is a great menu at every mealtime, particularly breakfast which I love as I like a good start to the day.

“It is important for me to stay in touch with family and friends so I am always on my phone.  From taking pictures to being part of a family WhatsApp group, I like to share what I am up to with my nearest and dearest and can do this anywhere in the home – whether it be the lounge, dining room or my bedroom.”

Hayley Bebbington, registered manager at Ashlands Manor, says: “William is a wonderful man with a great character and charming zest for life.  We were delighted to welcome him to Ashlands Manor and the whole team has enjoyed looking after him and spoiling him since his arrival.  We hope he is very happy here.”

William turns 97 next month, so he will also be the first resident at Ashlands Manor to celebrate a birthday.
